Bad prospects for a white Christmas: mild weather

It's looking bleak for a traditional white Christmas in Bavaria this year, as per the German Weather Service's (DWD) predictions. Despite some sunshine predicted in the Alpine foothills on Wendesday, the forecast calls for rain from Thursday until Christmas Eve. Temperatures will hover between six and twelve degrees throughout the festive period, with potential rainfall throughout.

Historically, a white Christmas in Bavaria has been more of an exception than a rule. The probability of the so-called Christmas thaw occurring, which brings mild Atlantic air and rain to the region, is as high as 70% annually. So, while it may be disappointing, it's not entirely unexpected.

As for the current weather, Germany as a whole is set to experience a burst of springlike weather this weekend, with temperatures reaching 19 degrees Celsius in some areas, including Bavaria.

While the DWD doesn't foresee a white Christmas this year, there's always the chance for weather to surprise us. Keep your fingers crossed, and bundle up — you never know!
