Backpacks distributed to 700 Alexandria students by Washington Wizards
Washington Post: Washington Wizards Host Backpack and Supplies Giveaway at William Ramsay Recreation Center
The Washington Post reports that the Washington Wizards, in partnership with an unnamed foundation, hosted a backpack and supplies giveaway at the William Ramsay Recreation Center on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025. The event aimed to inspire children and show the community's commitment to education in Washington D.C.
According to Principal Nefertiti Hunter-Holbeck, the event communicates to children that they matter and that the community cares about their education. She added that it reminds kids they are valued and matter. Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt described the event as extraordinary.
During the event, players Anthony Gill, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Jamir Watkins from the Wizards, as well as the team's mascot, G-Wiz, were present. They gave away 700 backpacks to students, along with free food, manicures, and giveaways. CapeTown DMV also provided free haircuts at the event. The backpacks and supplies were donated to launch the school operations for the 2025-26 academic year in Washington D.C.
Hunter-Holbeck emphasized the importance of education in the children's lives and their dreams and aspirations. She described the event as an amazing start for the school year. Kay-Wyatt stated that the event was about more than just backpacks, and it showed the community's commitment to education in Washington D.C.
The event was seen as a source of inspiration for the children to move forward and achieve their goals. With the support of the Washington Wizards, the children were equipped with the necessary tools to excel in their studies and reach their full potential in Washington D.C.
