Streamlining Selection for Nagelsmann and German Squad

As opposed to previous coaches Joachim Löw and Hansi Flick, Julian Nagelsmann faces a new challenge: limiting his player roster. The UEFA regulations for the 2024 European Championship restrict teams to only 23 professionals, as opposed to the 26 players called up for the 2021 Euro and 2022 World Cup. This news surfaced from the UEFA rules for the June 14 to July 14, 2024 tournament.

The need for larger squads during the previous European Championships was due to pandemics, such as the one disrupting the 2021 event, and added strain on players due to unusual tournament dates.

Adjusting the Roster

Nagelsmann initially named 26 players for his squad for the US trip in October. When the call-ups for Euro tests against Turkey and Austria were announced, the roster expanded to 27 players. However, due to Malick Thiaw and Chris Führich's absences, the team currently counts 25 players, including Mats Hummels, who's dealing with back problems.

The plan to shrink the roster for the initial March tests against the Netherlands and France is likely in the works, as Nagelsmann previously stated. The 36-year-old coach is expected to reveal his Euro squad before the last Bundesliga match on May 18, ensuring it's announced to UEFA before the June 7 deadline.

Preparing for the Tournament

The German team will relocate to Herzogenaurach's European Championship quarters two days after announcing their final squad. The group stage matches are set to take place in Munich (June 14), Stuttgart (June 19), and Frankfurt (June 23).

During the pandemic, UEFA relaxed regulations regarding squad sizes, but the standard limit of 23 players applies for the 2024 tournament. Jugendnationaltrainer Julian Nagelsmann will have to adhere to this restriction, as he did with his initial 25-strong roster for the upcoming Euro tests against Turkey and Austria. Rudimentarily, Nagelsmann is expected to finalize his European Championship lineup before the last Bundesliga match on May 18, ultimately complying with UEFA's deadline for announcing the final squad on June 7.
