Azerbaijan welcomes United Arab Emirates president during an official visit, complete with ceremonial events in Shusha.
In a historic visit on September 16, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, arrived in Azerbaijan. His visit marked a significant milestone in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.
Upon his arrival at Fuzuli International Airport, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan warmly welcomed Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. A guard of honour was lined up to pay respect to the UAE President.
The official programme commenced in Shusha, a city of great cultural and historical significance. Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, briefed Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President Ilham Aliyev on the New Shusha Mosque project. The design of the mosque symbolises the liberation of Shusha and Karabakh, featuring geometric patterns inspired by Shusha's historic mosques.
The New Shusha Mosque's foundation was laid by President Ilham Aliyev in 2021, and the two minarets of the mosque represent the eleventh month of the year when liberation was achieved.
The leaders inspected the guard of honour, met their respective delegations, and held a one-on-one meeting followed by an expanded session with delegations. They also posed for photographs in front of the Shusha Fortress, a symbol of resilience and history.
The visit included cultural and historical programmes in Shusha. The leaders viewed bullet-riddled monuments of Azerbaijani figures, remnants of the long-standing conflict. They also visited the Shusha branch of the National Carpet Museum, which was restored by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in 2021. The museum showcases various artifacts dating mainly from the 18th to 20th centuries.
President Aliyev and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended a Karabakh horses show at Jidir Duzu plain. As a gesture of friendship, President Aliyev presented a Karabakh horse named "Ergunesh" to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The official programme concluded with a luncheon hosted in Shusha on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev in honour of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The leaders discussed the future of bilateral relations, focusing on economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and regional security.
During their tour of the city of Fuzuli by car, the leaders were briefed on the Fuzuli, Zangilan, and Lachin International Airports constructed in Azerbaijan's liberated territories. These airports are a testament to the nation's determination to rebuild and develop its recently reclaimed lands.
In this visit, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President Ilham Aliyev celebrated the liberation of Shusha and Karabakh, fostered cultural exchange, and strengthened the bonds between their nations. This official visit marked a new chapter in the relationship between Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates.
