Azerbaijan and Armenia reach groundbreaking peace accord, welcomed by the United Arab Emirates

In a significant development for the South Caucasus region, Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed a peace agreement on August 11, 2025, and signed it in a U.S.-brokered ceremony on August 8, 2025. This agreement marks the most substantial step towards peace between the two nations since the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began.

The agreement commits both parties to a permanent ceasefire, the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity. A key aspect of the agreement is the creation of a strategic transit corridor, known as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), which will connect Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan through Armenian territory for 99 years. The U.S. has been granted exclusive special development rights for this corridor, aiming to facilitate transit of goods and energy between Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia, bypassing Russia and Iran.

The agreement has received positive responses from various regional players. Iran, while expressing support for the agreement as an important step towards lasting peace, has cautioned against foreign interventions that could undermine regional stability. The European Union has welcomed the agreement, stating that it positively impacts peaceful development in the region. Both Russia and Iran remain wary due to the reduction of their influence in the South Caucasus region.

The United States played a central role in brokering and hosting the signing, aiming to reduce competing regional powers' influence and promote economic development through the corridor. Turkey is expected to act as a stabilizing buffer and deterrent against destabilizing interference.

Despite the optimism, experts caution that historic grievances, border incidents, and unresolved issues could still threaten lasting peace, requiring sustained U.S. and international engagement to ensure successful implementation.

Ahmed Al Sayegh, Minister of State, has praised the wisdom of Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, and Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia, for their unwavering commitment to peaceful solutions and dialogue. The UAE, with its deep-rooted relations with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, believes in the importance of this cooperation for achieving growth and prosperity for both peoples. Minister Al Sayegh reiterates the UAE's commitment to strengthening bridges of partnership and dialogue in the region.

This diplomatic milestone underscores the UAE's role in advancing development and cooperation in the region, promoting peaceful coexistence, and resolving disputes through diplomatic means.
