Ayuso alleges Bolaños aimed to "disrupt" the Dos de Mayo event: "He came to instigate"
In a recent turn of events, a dispute between the Madrid Regional Government and the national government has surfaced, centred around the May 2nd celebrations.
Reyes Maroto, the PSOE candidate for the Madrid City Council, and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, confirmed their attendance at the May 2nd event. However, the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, was not invited to the tribune of the parade, a decision that has sparked controversy.
According to reports, Bolaños' team received an invitation and confirmed their attendance on Monday. However, on April 28, they were informed that access with an escort was not possible. This decision was defended by the Madrid Government, with President Isabel Díaz Ayuso stating that ministers are not obligated to be invited but do so out of courtesy.
The Government, on the other hand, sees this as a violation of the law regulating the presence of public officials at institutional events. Spokeswoman Isabel Rodríguez considered the decision not to allow Bolaños to access the tribune of the parade as "a further step in a campaign to delegitimize this Government."
The tension between the two governments escalated when Ayuso accused Bolaños of wanting to preside over the May 2nd acts and impose himself on the presidency of the Madrid Community. Ayuso's protocol chief had been warning Bolaños' team for several days that they were not acting correctly.
In response, sources from the Ministry of the Presidency denied that Bolaños intended to preside the event. Elías Bendodo, General Coordinator of the PP, defended the action of the Madrid Government, qualifying Bolaños' attempt to "be the protagonist on Madrid Day" as a "serious mistake."
Ayuso defended her protocol chiefs, stating that they should not go beyond anonymity because that's what protocol chiefs are for. She also emphasized that the May 2nd event is for the autonomous government, not ministers. Ayuso's government prevented Bolaños' team from ascending to the tribune of the May 2nd parade, causing tension with Moncloa.
In a statement, Ayuso said, "The Executive is not a master key that opens all the rooms of a hotel." She further questioned where her "will as an autonomous president" to decide who to invite to the acts of the Madrid Regional Government.
This dispute between the Madrid Regional Government and the national government promises to be a significant point of contention in the coming days. Both parties are yet to release official statements on the matter, but the tension is palpable as the May 2nd celebrations approach.
