Ayuso administration bars Bolaños from Dos de Mayo parade podium, escalating tensions with Moncloa government
In the heart of Madrid, the traditional homage to the Heroes of the Dos de Mayo took place on a day marked by institutional representation and political undertones.
Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the President of the Community of Madrid, presided over the acts, with the Military Band, a section of honors, and a squad of pioneers from the 71st Antiaircraft Artillery Regiment of the Army of Land lending a solemn air to the proceedings. Notable attendees included Eugenia Carballedo, José Luis Martínez Almeida, councilors of Ayuso's government, José Luis Sampedro, and others.
The first act took place at the cemetery of La Florida, where the tomb of the 43 Madrid men shot on May 2, 1808 was honoured. Juan Carlos Quer Pinto, the Luzón Foundation, Dani Martín, Sara García Alonso, Koke, Andrés Pajares, and some Ukrainian children were also awarded during the ceremony.
However, the event was not without controversy. The Minister of the Presidency, Felix Bolanos, attended the institutional acts for the Dos de Mayo holiday, a move that strained the relationship between Ayuso's government and the Central Government. Ayuso did not refer to the controversy in her speech, choosing instead to focus on the impact of events in Madrid in a marked electoral context.
The Government of the Community of Madrid saw Bolanos' attendance as a provocation, while the PP accused Ayuso of turning the Dos de Mayo festival into a political fight. The Minister of Territorial Policy and spokesperson of the Executive, Isabel Rodriguez, was invited but did not participate due to personal reasons. Pedro Sanchez, the President of the Government, was not invited to the celebration.
The attendance of Felix Bolanos added to the ongoing tension between the two parties, with Ayuso giving a speech that emphasised the importance of the day, while also subtly addressing the political climate. The Government of the Community of Madrid sees the next regional election, expected to be held in May 2027, as an opportunity to reaffirm their position.
As the day drew to a close, Ayuso presented the medals of the Community of Madrid and the decorations of the Order of the Dos de Mayo at the Real Casa de Correos, bringing an end to a day filled with tradition, controversy, and political undertones.
