In a recent interview on ZDF's "Copa TS" podcast, Bundesliga referee Deniz Aytekin (45) suggested an intriguing idea: explaining referee decisions directly to stadium fans, using video evidence. Aytekin believes this could enhance acceptance of decisions and has no qualms about the proposal.

This concept isn't entirely new. Referees at the Club World Cup and subsequent international competitions, such as the Women's World Cup and U17 World Cup, have already provided explanations via video evidence. Starting in 2024, we might see the Bundesliga implementing this model, provided it passes a one-year trial phase overseen by IFAB.

Stadium fans have traditionally been informed about VAR reviews through notices on video walls, with only TV viewers viewing the actual VAR images. However, head referee Jochen Drees (43) is open to expanding upon this by granting stadium spectators and TV viewers equal access to VAR images during reviews.

Though IFAB hasn't directly tested the use of referee explanations and VAR images in stadiums, the Bundesliga is currently conducting a trial. This initiative aligns with broader goals to foster greater trust and transparency in refereeing processes, potentially influencing other European leagues. The Premier League, too, has indicated plans to adopt a similar approach.
