The Precarious Standoff: Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei Under Threat

Ayatollah Khamenei's actions center around his personal beliefs

The Israeli Defense Minister, Benny Gantz, has set his sights on Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, likening him to Adolf Hitler. With Iran's nuclear program under constant attack, Khamenei finds himself in a perilous position, grappling with the threat of his own life and the fate of the Islamic Republic he leads.

In recent times, Israel has carried out targeted assassinations of Khamenei's advisors, high-ranking military commanders, and nuclear scientists. Gantz's inflammatory rhetoric against Khamenei has added fuel to the fire, intensifying the already tense relations between the two nations.

A Modern-Day Hitler?

Gantz's comparison of Khamenei to Hitler is a deliberate attempt to demonize the Iranian leader. "A dictator like Khamenei, who heads a state like Iran and has the destruction of the State of Israel as his goal, this abhorrent objective of destroying Israel, cannot continue to exist," Gantz proclaimed. This fiery language is reminiscent of the rhetoric used during World War II, highlighting the escalating tensions between the two nations.

The Israeli army, according to Gantz, would have eliminated Hitler had they existed during World War II. These inflammatory comments followed an Iranian rocket attack that hit a hospital in southern Israel.

Trump's Mixed Messages

While President Trump has reportedly objected to an Israeli plan to directly eliminate Khamenei, he has also made contradictory statements. On Truth Social, Trump expressed that they knew exactly where Khamenei was hiding, and commented, "He's an easy target, but he's safe there - we won't take him out (kill him), at least not yet." In another post, Trump called for Iran to "surrender unconditionally," a demand that Khamenei firmly rejected.

The Question of Succession

Khamenei, now 86 years old, has led Iran since the death of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989. Despite years of international pressure, sanctions, and internal protests brutally suppressed in 2022 and 2023, he has maintained control over the country. The question of his succession has long been a contentious issue in Iran due to his advanced age. However, the current conflict may accelerate this process, potentially leading to a significant shift in the Shiite Mullah system that has governed Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Netanyahu's Plan of Action

Recent Israeli attacks on high-ranking Iranian military figures, such as the army chief and the head of the Revolutionary Guards, have showcased the Israeli intelligence capabilities. This leads to the question of whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would actually order an assassination attempt on Khamenei. The location of the Iranian leader, who has not left Iran since his inauguration and his last overseas visit to North Korea in 1989, is top secret and under the highest level of security.

Arash Azizi of Boston University expressed concerns about a potential Israeli plan for regime change, either through partial support of an internal coup or by continued high-level assassinations aiming to instigate a fundamental shift in Iran's position towards Israel or a regime change.

A Nation in Turmoil

Many Iranians desire the end of the Islamic Republic, but this wish comes at a cost they are not willing to pay. Iran has been torn apart by internal protests and the brutal suppression of those protests. Despite the escalating tensions and the destruction of key nuclear facilities, the idea of a popular uprising leading to regime change lacks realism, according to Azizi.
