Axelle Berthoumieu of France receives a reduced 9-match suspension for biting Aoife Wafer of Ireland during the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup.

In the recent quarterfinal match of the Women's Rugby World Cup in Exeter, England, a shocking incident unfolded during France's victory over Ireland. French second row and co-captain Manae Feleu was handed a three-match ban for a dangerous tackle, while her teammate, Axelle Berthoumieu, received a nine-match ban for biting Ireland's Aoife Wafer.

The disciplinary committee, an independent commission, issued the penalties against both players. The bite incident occurred during a penalty turnover in the game, but no disciplinary action was taken against Berthoumieu during the match.

Initially, Berthoumieu was facing a suspension of 12 games, the maximum penalty. However, her ban was reduced to nine matches after an appeal, recognising her admission, clean disciplinary record, remorse, and apology. Feleu, on the other hand, did not believe the foul play warranted a red card punishment and said she would appeal the penalty. Her original ban was upheld on Tuesday.

Ireland's captain, Sam Monaghan, raised the incident with referee Aimee Barrett-Theron during the game. However, the FPRC stated that during the live review, they were unable to determine clear and obvious foul play. The committee also mentioned that they did not have the benefit of additional evidential submissions to corroborate the bite incident.

Berthoumieu's ban means she will miss France's semifinal against England on Saturday and either the bronze medal game or the final on September 27. Feleu's ban will keep her out of action for the next three matches.

World Rugby, the sport's governing body, announced the decisions of the FPRC. No new facts were provided about Monaghan or Barrett-Theron. Both players and the referee will undoubtedly be under scrutiny as the tournament continues.
