Axel Springer Names Matthias Bruegelmann as New Sports Chief
Axel Springer has appointed Matthias Bruegelmann as the new sports chief of the combined sports department of 'Bild' and 'Bild am Sonntag'. Bruegelmann, 52, brings a wealth of experience, having spent 30 years at Axel Springer, witnessing and contributing to the shift from print to digital and AI integration.
Bruegelmann began his career at 'Bild' Bremen in 1995 as a reporter. He steadily climbed the ranks, becoming the deputy editor-in-chief of 'Bild' in 2014. In 2011, he took over the European sports editorship of 'Sport Bild'. Most recently, he served as the sports editor-in-chief, establishing the new sports competence center for various Axel Springer publications.
Following Henning Feindt's promotion, Carli Underberg, 44, will take over as acting sports editor-in-chief. Underberg will also oversee editorial partnerships. Walter M. Straten, 67, continues his role as an acting sports editor-in-chief.
Matthias Bruegelmann's appointment signals a new era for the sports departments of 'Bild' and 'Bild am Sonntag'. With his extensive experience and understanding of the digital landscape, he is well-positioned to lead the team into the future. Meanwhile, Carli Underberg steps into the acting sports editor-in-chief role, following Torsten Rose's tenure, which ended in 2017.
