Axel Springer acquires The Telegraph in historic £575m deal after fierce bidding war

The Telegraph is set for its first change of ownership in 168 years after Axel Springer agreed to buy the newspaper for £575 million. The German media group outbid rivals, including the Daily Mail, to secure the deal. Meanwhile, the UK government has launched a separate consultation on tightening social media rules for younger teenagers.

Axel Springer was chosen as the preferred buyer after presenting a stronger offer than competitors. The acquisition, announced on 28 February 2026, still requires approval from Ofcom and competition regulators. CEO Mathias Döpfner has stated the company's intention to reinforce the Telegraph as the leading bourgeois-conservative publication in the English-speaking world, maintaining its long-standing ties to the British establishment and Conservative Party.

The deal comes just days after the announcement, and no immediate changes to the newspaper's editorial direction or audience have been made. Historically, the *Telegraph* has held a conservative stance, a position Axel Springer plans to uphold and expand. In unrelated news, the UK government has opened a three-month public consultation on stricter social media regulations for children aged 13 to 15. The move aims to gather views on potential new safeguards for younger users. Separately, data shows that OpenAI's trial of ads on ChatGPT is being dominated by retail and grocery promotions. These two categories account for 44% of all ad impressions on the platform, highlighting their early dominance in the AI-driven advertising space.

The Telegraph acquisition remains subject to regulatory review, with no shifts in its editorial approach expected until approval is granted. The government's consultation on social media rules for teenagers will run for three months, while OpenAI's ad trial continues to reflect strong interest from retail and grocery brands. Both developments signal ongoing changes in media and digital regulation.
