What's "Tatort" All About?
Excitingly set, impressively acted: the final 'Tatort' featuring Axel Milberg - Axel Milberg's Recent Site of Illegal Activity
Eleonore Frost (Corinna Kirchhoff) had a reputation as a mother from hell: icy, manipulative, and abusive. Her son Robert (August Diehl), a quarantined computer nerd, still endured her daily tortures into his late 40s. However, endurance had its limits. At a dinner, he snapped and put an end to her life with a chokehold, dismembered the body, and stored the head in an aquarium. Ahead of anyone noticing that mother and son had vanished, Inspector Borowski (Axel Milberg) inadvertently stumbled upon the case.
Borowski, a mere days from retirement, needed a new passport. Coincidentally, Robert Frost had once held a position at the citizen's office, and his vacant desk ultimately led Borowski to the photo of the crime scene. The memory of the eerie house, which he had previously found unsettling as a child, sunk into his subconscious. Upon discovering that unexplained deaths and Frost's unexpected absence had occurred at the office the previous year, Borowski realized investigation was the key to a final, thrilling adventure. All he had was a limited amount of working days to lay the case to rest.
What Makes "Borowski and the Head of Medusa" a Must-Watch?
This "Tatort" stepped into the shadows to reveal gruesome, blood-curdling scenes that left an indelible mark. From the oppressive dinner that led into a violent orgy to the unmasking of the culprit, the audience remains captivated. August Diehl delivered an exceptional performance as a mute, unpredictable psychopath named Robert Frost. In the supporting cast, actress Klara Lange stood out from "Die Discounter" as a civil servant. Despite the crime being disclosed early on, the story manages to maintain suspense and atmosphere until its conclusion.
The Drawbacks?
Almost none. However, "Borowski and the Head of Medusa" is not for the squeamish, as it boasts a generous amount of blood and gore. Additionally, it's somewhat disappointing that Borowski's private life is not touched upon more heavily in the ending stages. Although he briefly recalls his damaged relationship with Frieda Jung, the focus remains primarily on the case.
The Inspectors?
Axel Milberg delivered a flawless portrayal of Borowski's intuitive loner with unpenetrable instincts in his last hurrah. His retirement did not seem imminent, as his unease about planning his dream vacation highlighted. He preferred to focus on work-related matters and took unconventional solutions rapidly. Inspector Sila Sahin (Almila Bagriacik) provided an exceptional cohort, sticking by Borowski even after their actions were questioned by their superiors.
When confronted by their boss, Borowski chose to defend Sahin, but she insisted on backing him up without hesitation. "You'll be missed," she told Borowski while he remained in silent contemplation.
To Watch or Not to Watch?
Tune in for a fitting farewell to Axel Milberg's 20-year tenure as Inspector Borowski. Unfortunately, the final moments of his departure were withheld from the press screening, making this episode all the more worthwhile. A decent measure of curiosity and stomach-turning suspense awaits.
