Awarding of Honorary Palme d'Or to Robert De Niro in Cannes Festival; A Look Back at His Festival History.
Rockin' with Robbie D at the Riviera: De Niro's Excellent Adventure in the City of Lights!
Hey there, film freaks! Let's dish on a Cinema Senorita that's been gracing the French Riviera for what feels like forever - the one and only, Robert De Niro! This 81-year-old acting vet has been an integral part of Cannes Film Festival for half a century, baby!
Way back in '76, De Niro starred in two freakin' masterpieces – Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" and Bernardo Bertolucci's "1900" - that premiered in the competition section at Cannes. "Taxi Driver" struck gold, taking home the festival's crowning glory – the Palme d'Or.
Since then, this legend has been a regular face on the Croisette. He showed up with "The King of Comedy" in '83, followed by Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in America" in '84, and Roland Joffe's "The Mission" in '86. And guess what? Joffe's flick, too, scored the Palme d'Or, making De Niro one of the fortunate few to be in two Palme d'Or-winning movies.
Even though De Niro co-runs the Tribeca Festival, he's never abandoned his Cannes family. He served as the jury president in 2011, awarding Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" the Palme. Most recently, he and Scorsese reunited to premiere "Killers of the Flower Moon" in 2023.
When his honorary Palme d'Or was announced last month, De Niro shared, "I have such close feelings for Festival de Cannes... it's like coming home." The award ceremony goes down on May 13 during the festival’s opening.
