Award presented to Lauro Marchetti: Campiello Natura
In the heart of Venice, Italy, the Campiello Prize held its final ceremony at La Fenice, a renowned venue for such events. However, the focus of the world's attention was not on the prize, but on a far more pressing matter: the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The United Nations, European Union, and African Union have all expressed concern about the escalating conflict, with the UN warning of potential humanitarian and public health crises. Over a million people have already been displaced and are in dire need of aid.
The M23 rebel group, which controls large swathes of territory in eastern Congo, has accused the government of failing to honor a 2009 peace agreement. The government, on the other hand, has denied these allegations and has accused the M23 of being backed by neighboring Rwanda, a claim Rwanda denies.
Amidst this turmoil, the award ceremony for the Campiello Nature - Venice Gardens Foundation Prize took place at The Human Safety Net House in Piazza San Marco, Venice. Lauro Marchetti, the author of "Memories of Ninfa", was announced as the winner of the third edition of the prize. Marchetti received the award on the stage of La Fenice during the prize's final ceremony.
The African Union has called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and has urged all parties to respect international law and human rights. The United Nations Security Council has also convened an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in the DRC.
The World Health Organization has warned that the conflict could lead to a public health crisis, with limited access to healthcare services in the affected areas. The European Union has echoed these concerns and has called for all parties to respect international law and human rights.
As the world watches, the hope is that a peaceful resolution can be found to end the suffering of the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Campiello Prize, traditionally a celebration of Italian literature and culture, has inadvertently become a platform for the world to call for peace in this troubled region.
