Awami League urged for participation in the upcoming election by GM Quader
Jatiya Party Faces Internal Struggle Amidst Political Disputes
Bangladesh's Jatiya Party, a significant player in the country's political landscape, is currently grappling with internal disputes and signs of a rift among its senior leaders. Despite official denials of a split, growing mistrust within the party's top policymaking circle suggests an ongoing struggle for influence or control.
The party's chairman, Ghulam Mohammad Quader, is expected to guide the Jatiya Party towards a positive role in Bangladesh's politics. However, recent developments have highlighted the party's internal turmoil. In a bold move, a newly emerged faction of the Jatiya Party, led by Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, held their 10th National Council in Dhaka's Gulshan, distancing themselves from the GM Quader faction.
The meeting was presided over by JaPa Secretary General Barrister Shamim Haider Patwari and included speeches from several party leaders. Anisul and Ruhul were elected as chairman and secretary general of the newly formed faction by a voice vote of councillors at the National Council. The faction has also written to the Election Commission to approve their recently formed committee as the "mainstream" of the party.
Ghulam Mohammad Quader, in response, has been vocal about the party's challenges. He criticized both past and current governments for restricting his political activities under legal pretenses, stating that the current government follows the same pattern as the Awami League. Quader highlighted his long-standing opposition to electoral restrictions under Sheikh Hasina's administration, defending citizens' right to vote.
Quader also emphasized the need for citizens to participate in a free and fair political process. He stated that many fabricated murder cases have been filed against him and JaPa party activists. Despite confirmations from the Law Adviser and the IGP that these cases are false, bail pleas are still denied, according to Quader.
Quader has also recalled his previous protest against the Awami League banning Jamaat-e-Islami from politics. He claimed that except for JaPa, all other parties enjoy government privileges, while they face obstacles in exercising their constitutional rights. Attempts to intimidate them through arson, attacks, and legal harassment will not succeed, Quader said.
Quader has threatened to protest in the streets if anyone else tries to claim their party symbol. He stated that elections excluding certain parties, particularly the Awami League, would not be acceptable. The Jatiya Party, under Quader's leadership, will pursue politics in the interest of the people from now on.
The internal strife within the Jatiya Party is not just an internal matter. Incidents like the vandalism and burning of the Jatiya Party's central office in Dhaka by protesters under the "Anti-Fascism Student, Worker, and People's Movement" banner reflect external pressures or conflicts as well.
As the Jatiya Party navigates these internal disputes, the future of its cohesion and role in Bangladesh's political landscape remains uncertain. No definitive split has been formally recognized, but signs of internal divisions persist. The party, in its current state, is expected to face challenges in maintaining its unity and playing a significant role in the country's politics.
- The ongoing internal struggles within the Jatiya Party, a major player in Bangladesh's policy-and-legislation and general-news arena, are causing uncertainty about its future cohesion and role in the country's politics, as demonstrated by the recent formation of a new faction and external pressures.
- The growing factionalism within the Jatiya Party, marked by the emergence of a new faction led by Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, is not confined to internal matters, as evidenced by the vandalism of the party's central office in Dhaka, which reflects external conflicts and politics that are influencing the party's stability.
