Keeping the Troubled Gas Giant Afloat: A Second Chance for Nord Stream 2 AG

Maintaining Solvency Permitted: Nord Stream 2 Corporation Ongoing Operations Allowed - Avoidance of Bankruptcy: Nord Stream 2 AG granted permissible operational continuation

In the world of highly leveraged pipeline operation, Nord Stream 2 AG, a Russian subsidiary of OAO Gazprom, has managed to secure a lifeline through a court-approved composition agreement. This allows for a debt restructuring process, effectively postponing bankruptcy proceedings that would've been the result of Swiss law. The company is based in the canton of Zug, where it's been attracting attention due to its massive indebtedness and controversial nature.

The agreement was reached with major creditors, including European giants like ENGIE, OMV, Shell, Uniper, and Wintershall, who evidently agreed to substantial discounts on their investments. They had initially invested billions, a fact that points to the lengthy negotiations surrounding the agreement. The total construction cost of the pipeline is estimated to be around ten billion euros.

The compensation of small creditors, such as construction companies from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has reportedly been addressed according to court instructions from January. Some of these businesses have confirmed that their dues have been settled recently.

The pipeline, initially intended to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany, was completed years ago but has remained idle since then. The project was halted shortly after the 2022 Russian attack on Ukraine, and a part of both the Nord Stream 2 and the operational Nord Stream 1 pipeline suffered damage from an explosion in September of the same year.

There have been whispers of potential US investor involvement, with figures like businessman and Trump supporter Stephen P. Lynch being mentioned in recent news. He proposed that the purchase could provide an excellent opportunity to divert Europe's energy supply under combined American and European control, potentially using an American pipeline to transport Russian gas to Europe. Interestingly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov hinted at discussing Nord Stream in March.

Gas market analyst Heiko Lohmann shared his skepticism about the pipeline's future, citing industry perspectives and potential peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine that could favor the use of pipelines transiting through Ukraine and Poland. It's also been speculated that the pipeline could be repurposed to transport hydrogen, although the feasibility of this idea remains uncertain.
