Heating Up in the Middle East
Avoid journeys to the Gulf area, as per the Foreign Affairs Council's recommendation.
Berlin - After the back-and-forth air attacks between Israel and Iran, the Foreign Office is now advising against non-essential travel to the entire Gulf region. In the evening, the travel advice online was updated for these countries: United Arab Emirates, home to popular vacation spot Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan.
For all of Israel, the ministry had already issued a travel warning in the afternoon. This is a higher risk level for countries that pose a threat to life and limb; however, this does not equate to a travel ban.
Before the current flare-up, Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, and Iraq already had travel warnings. The same caution applies to specific parts of Lebanon and Iraq. The Foreign Office generally discourages travel to these countries.
Active Crisis Response Center
The crisis response center of the Foreign Office remains operational 24/7, monitoring the situation closely. "We urge all Germans to heed the directives from local security authorities, read the travel and safety advice, register on the Federal Foreign Office's crisis prevention list, and keep the information updated," a ministry spokeswoman stated to the German Press Agency. "Only then can the Federal Foreign Office reach people in an emergency."
Continued Functioning of Foreign Representations
Foreign embassies in the region continue to operate, even if the German embassy in Tel Aviv was closed on Friday due to the circumstances. The embassy remains reachable by phone and mail. The embassies keep in touch with the Germans registered in the region and provide them with departure options. Several thousand Germans are currently in Israel.
