Aviation industry braces for potential disruption in flight schedules
Frequent Flight Cancellations and Airport Restrictions in Russia Amidst Security Threats
Here's the lowdown on the current aviation chaos in Russia:
Moscow is experiencing a whirlwind of disruptions at major airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and even Zhukovsky. The turbulence kicked off with "no-fly" zones at Vnukovo (from 18:20 on May 6 until 04:08 on May 7) and Sheremetyevo (from 01:00 until 05:30 on May 7), according to Rosaviatsiya press secretary Artem Koreniako. Restrictions at Domodedovo are still ongoing.
The turbulence isn't limited to Moscow, either. Airlines are grappling with cancellations and delays in multiple cities, including Kaluga, Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Tambov, Yaroslavl, and Kazan (though restrictions have recently been lifted there). It seems smaller airports are getting caught up in the national airspace commotion—with no specific reports detailing disruptions in these cities, yet.
But it's not just Russia feeling the heat—Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines have terminated flights to and from Moscow, impacting over 15,000 passengers[1][2][4][5]. Aeroflot, meanwhile, has cautioned passengers about potential cancellations or consolidations due to temporary airspace restrictions[1].
In Moscow alone, hundreds of flights have been axed, according to the "Yandex Raspisanie" online board. Ural Airlines, in particular, is currently managing around 8,500 stranded passengers, due to the ongoing restrictions. They've had to cancel 18 flights and delay around 40, with nine more aircraft located at alternative airports[1].
