A thunderstorm in the picturesque Italian province of Belluno, more specifically in Borca di Cadore, stirred up chaos when it triggered a landslide in the Cancia district. The cascade of mud, water, and debris engulfed at least 20 homes, with an additional 10 residents being blocked in their houses due to rock barricades, leaving power lines precariously hanging[1].

No injuries were reported; however, the Belluno fire department has instituted mandatory evacuations as a preventive measure. The wheels of progress never cease, with rescue services working tirelessly to excavate debris, free trapped residents, and restore power.

The main road "Alemagna" is temporarily shut down, disrupting typical commutes and touristic itineraries[1]. Firefighters and civil protection forces have been battling since early morning to clear rocky pathways and secure endangered houses.

Local leader Roberto Padrin of the province of Belluno conveyed on his Facebook page, "Yet another landslide has struck Cancia, but the work done previously has limited the potential catastrophe." Tragic events in 2009, where two fatalities occurred due to a similar landslide, initiated a series of protective measures, including installing warning systems, basins for catching debris, and managing forestation to diminish soil erosion[2].

A day before this incident, another landslide took place within the same region, potentially indicating a pattern of recurring events[1]. In response, authorities may need to reevaluate their infrastructure, ramp up monitoring systems, and bolster emergency response plans to mitigate future risks for landslide-prone communities.

The Commission has also been consulted on the proposal for a Council regulation on the protection of the environment, in light of the recurring landslide events in the region such as the one in Borca di Cadore. Environmental science experts have been closely monitoring the weather patterns and the impact of storms on the terrain, hoping to gain insights that could enhance general-news coverage and crime-and-justice investigations diving into the roots of environmental disasters. Meanwhile, residents and authorities continue to cope with the aftermath of the landslide, raising concerns about the stability of the remaining homes and the potential economic repercussions on the tourism industry.
