Autumn Period Poses Highest Risk for Motor Vehicle Collisions in America, According to CARFAX

In the United States, the roads can pose unique challenges during different seasons. According to data from CARFAX, a division of S&P Global Mobility, the most accidents occur in autumn in 39 out of 50 states. This is due to hazardous road conditions caused by wet leaves, poor visibility from fog, and increased wildlife crossings.

Drivers are twice as likely to have an accident in the dark compared to daylight, and about half of all U.S. accidents happen in the dark, despite fewer drivers out after dusk. Less visibility also means slower reaction times, making it essential to stay alert and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

To prepare for autumn's challenges, it's crucial to check your wiper fluid level and inspect your wiper blades. Slush from the road can be kicked up onto your windshield, making it hard to see. Carry an extra gallon of wiper fluid in cold-weather months, and ensure your blades are free of debris and cracks. If necessary, replace them.

In some states, such as Pennsylvania and Florida, the most dangerous season is spring. Meanwhile, summer sees the most accidents in Hawaii, Washington, and Oregon, while winter is still hazardous, marking the season with the highest number of accidents in six states: Connecticut, Oklahoma, Vermont, New Hampshire, Montana, and North Dakota.

To help drivers navigate these seasonal risks, S&P Global Mobility's CARFAX offers the CARFAX Car Care App. This app provides timely reminders for upcoming service and recalls, locates trusted local repair shops, and even alerts users to open recalls on their vehicles.

More deer crashes occur in the last few months of the year, due to mating season and migration. To avoid these collisions, drivers should be extra vigilant, especially in states with high deer populations.

In cold weather, tire pressure can drop suddenly, while cold weather can harden the rubber, hurting traction. It's essential to check tire pressure monthly and consider winter tires in cold climates.

Lastly, cold weather can reduce a car battery's power, and it could fail. Drivers should check their car battery regularly and prepare a winter survival kit, which should include water, a blanket, an ice scraper, durable food items, road flares, a phone charger, a flashlight, and first-aid supplies.
