Literary Autumn in Göttingen featuring Angela Merkel and Bela B performance - Autumn literary event in Göttingen featuring Chancellor Merkel and Bela B
The Göttingen Literature Autumn 2025 is set to be an exciting event, taking place from October 18 to November 2, 2025, in southern Lower Saxony. The ten-day festival will feature a diverse programme, including international literature, live events, societal debates, entertainment, satire, and expert talks.
Highlights of the festival include Angela Merkel's appearance on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 19:00 in the Sheddachhalle im Sartorius Quartier, Göttingen. Her event, titled "Freiheit" (Freedom), will see Merkel reflecting on her 16 years leading Germany through many crises and shaping national and international politics. The session is highly anticipated, and the hall tickets for this event are already sold out.
Other notable scheduled events around the festival include:
- Urban Pop event on Bob Dylan with Peter Urban and Ocke Bandixen at the Alte Rathaus on October 18.
- Reading by the German Book Prize winner at the Alte Rathaus on October 18.
- Presentation of "Tagebuch aus Gaza" (Diary from Gaza) by Katrin Glatz Brubakk at the Literaturhaus Göttingen on October 19.
- Reading of "Die Kollaborateure" by Katrina Tuvera at Literaturhaus Göttingen on October 21.
- "OstWestfrau*" event at Stadthalle Northeim on October 29, with a bus shuttle from the festival.
The event series will take place in various locations in and around Göttingen. This year's festival promises a rich lineup of notable figures and varied, socially relevant topics. In addition to Merkel, other celebrities and experts, such as Clemens Böckmann (author of a novel about Stasi-era sexual exploitation), Christine Westermann, and Mona Ameziane, will also feature in the festival with their respective topics.
Four events will be interpreted live in sign language, and most of the events will be available digitally via stream until the end of November. The programme includes discussions and reports on political and societal topics such as Gaza, democracy, and women. Last year, the event attracted 23,600 visitors.
