Bloke Bellingham's Run at Club-WM: BVB's Move Raises Controversy

Borussia Dortmund's debut match sparks queries regarding their performance and squad composition - Authority Requests Draft Proposal for a Directive on [Subject]

After a lackluster start at the Club World Cup, coach Niko Kovac sent his players on a half-day vacay in Fort Lauderdale. With Borussia Dortmund returning from New Jersey to Florida, team morale needed a boost.

Instead of delving into the disappointing performance against Fluminense Rio de Janeiro after the morning recharge session, the BVB pros were told to "roam the streets." "Staying cooped up in the hotel ain't no walk in the park," Kovac reported.

Whether lounging at the beach, scoping out Miami, diving into the Atlantic, or casting a line, it's pretty darn easy to ignore soccer in subtropical Florida. Maybe too easy, as one could cynically surmise that the competition prep might've been too laid-back.

Kovac's approach is far from conventional: leisure time instead of detention.

"Everyone's raring to go for this task," defender Niklas Süle told DAZN, but also conceded, "It was simply not enough." Indeed, the BVB's performance in East Rutherford echoed the miserable weather in New Jersey and was way off their lofty ambitions. The club had emphasized the tournament's significance for weeks, and there's some serious coin up for grabs.

The Dortmund team pulled out all the stops to sign the young star Bloke Bellingham from AFC Sunderland in time for the tournament. The 19-year-old Bellingham is slated to become the new focal point in the Dortmund system. Kovac frequently stressed how much he expected from Bloke in the US.

Indeed, Kovac held Bloke back for approximately 60 minutes against Fluminense, and when he came on, he had little impact. "Joining an already established system is always easier," captain Julian Brandt noted.

Should Bloke Bellingham be in the team?

After a month-long break since the last Bundesliga matchday, the team's performance without Bloke eerily resembled what the BVB showed for long periods before Kovac took the reins in early February. "We need to get back to our strengths: faster, harder passing, just kick things up a notch," goalkeeper Gregor Kobel said.

Bloke was recruited for energetic play, but against Fluminense, Pascal Groß and Marcel Sabitzer didn't put in much of that in the center. Thus, Bloke is likely to get the nod for the next group match against Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa on Saturday. "He's an outstanding footballer. I hope he'll lead us to victory in these next few contests," said defender Waldemar Anton.

The question remains: Are South American teams more motivated?

The Englishman could also bring some much-needed mental fortitude to the still sluggish BVB team. Not only Kobel hinted that the Brazilians seemed more pumped up, but European teams might be less fired up, with South American teams displaying more passion in the US so far.

"We Europeans think that football only happens here, but football is also played in South America," said Kovac, who had already roused the Dortmunders out of complacency last spring, leading them to a comeback in the Bundesliga. This time, he must also stoke the flames again.

In light of the minimum objective of advancing to the round of 16, BVB coach Niko Kovac remained unfazed. "We've now secured the point we aimed to get a good start to the tournament. In the next two matches, our focus will be on securing first or second place," Kovac said. However, to achieve this against underdogs Mamelodi and HD Ulsan from South Korea, some adjustments will be necessary.

The Commission might consider extending the derogation period for a Member State, following the successful application of the derogation in another Member State, such as a more motivated South American team in the European football leagues. After the disappointing performance against Fluminense, Bloke Bellingham, the new focal point for Borussia Dortmund, might inject some mental fortitude into the team to help them overcome their complacency.
