Investigations Intensify Following Violent Attack at Bad Freienwalde Diversity Festival

After a heated weekend in the small town of Bad Freienwalde, authorities are cracking down on a suspected right-wing extremist following a brutal attack on a diversity rally. On Sunday, a group of masked men launched an assault, wounding two to three individuals.
Now, four days later, police have taken action. With a warrant, investigators from the Märkisch-Oderland district have raided the apartment of a 21-year-old suspect, as well as that of his parents, according to a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt (Oder). The authorities believe this individual to be connected to the violent incident.
The searches yielded clothing and mobile devices, providing potential evidence in the case. The 21-year-old, so far, has remained silent on the allegations, exercising his right to refuse to testify. At this stage in the investigation, officials have only established an initial suspicion, not enough for a strong arrest warrant.
The small party "The Third Way," with neonazi and anti-immigration positions, is also said to be associated with the suspect, according to various media outlets. "The Third Way" has around 70 members in Brandenburg, with a national person potential of 950, as per the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
Debate about the protection of such events has erupted in the wake of the Bad Freienwalde attack. This weekend, a Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebration is scheduled in Eberswalde, with anticipated participation of 1,500 to 2,000 individuals. As a precautionary measure, police will be providing increased security on site, given the recent queer-hostile attacks across Germany.
