Authorities suspect the discovery of two bodies could be linked to a missing couple, Karen Kopp and her husband Davido Kopp, in Washington state
In a Saturday press conference, Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders revealed this startling information.
Civilian investigators discovered a body near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, barely a mile from the Kopp's property. Mike Brooks of the Sheriff's Office shared this with CNN. Further examination led authorities to discover a second body nearby. The base is situated about 17 miles southwest of Tacoma.
Sanders stated that they have sufficient evidence to suspect these bodies are of Karen and Davido Kopp. He added that the medical examiner's office will confirm this.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, mentioned the Thurston County medical examiner Gary Warnock, speaking with CNN.
"We understand their families are going through a tough time," Sanders acknowledged. "This issue may be affecting them negatively, but we have addressed a matter … for families suffering from separation, the possibility of a burial could bring comfort. Our loved ones are of immense importance.", Sanders hoped.
Investigators continue to collect evidence at the scene, Sanders added.
CNN previously reported the Kopps went missing on November 13 when Davido failed to attend a chiropractor appointment. The clinic remains operating, with deputies conducting regular checks.
Earlier, Brooks informed CNN that Thurston County detective Timothy Burke had been arrested in relation to the case. He was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping, and bail was denied.
"At this point, it's impossible to speculate on the intentions", Sanders communicated at the press conference. "The relationship seems like that of a landlord and tenant" he added.
CNN reached out to Burke's attorney for a comment.
Previously, Pauline Dutton, Karen's sister, told CNN that Burke was working in exchange for lodging on the Kopp's property, with an eviction imminent.
