Authorities reject Sam Hamad's proposal to halt the operation of the tram system
The city of Quebec is witnessing a shift in its ambitious tramway project, with several significant developments taking place.
In early 2022, Jean-Marc Arbaud, the head of the Tramway project, retired, leaving a vacancy at the helm that remains unfilled as of now. The search results do not provide information about his successor.
During the last municipal campaign, the opposition at city hall called for a halt to the tramway project, with Sam Hamad, a fierce critic of the project, being a key figure. However, the team of Mayor Bruno Marchand, who openly supported the tramway, managed to win the mayoral race by a narrow majority.
Mayor Marchand's team, once in power, had to backtrack on their promise to modify the tramway due to technical constraints. This decision has been met with criticism from Sam Hamad's opponents, who label him as 'Quebec's Denis Coderre.'
Meanwhile, the opposition's campaign against the tramway project has not gone unnoticed. Sam Hamad's campaign has been criticized for showing that he 'can't be mayor.'
In a separate incident, Radio-Canada suspended journalist Elisa Serret for alleged 'antisemitic' remarks. A segment aired Monday on RDI was criticized by Jewish associations and Ottawa politicians, adding another layer of controversy to the ongoing political drama in Quebec City.
The tramway project, which has been a contentious issue in the city's politics, continues to be a topic of debate and discussion. As the city moves forward, the future of the tramway project remains uncertain, with many questions left unanswered.
