Authorities question alliance between red government and green security force

The First Hundred Days of Burgenland's Red-Green Government

Head to the northeastern corner of Austria and find Burgenland, a region brimming with cultural diversity, courtesy of German, Croatian, and Hungarian influences. Becoming part of Austria in 1921, it's had a turbulent history, spending time under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hungary, and now Austria.

Politically speaking, this state has seen the SPÖ (Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs) in every government since 1945, with the party providing the governor since 1964. However, in 2000, the Greens made their debut in the state parliament, never holding more than two seats for the last 25 years.

Red-Green in Burgenland: A Rocky Start

Fast forward to 2010, and the Greens' presence in the assembly seemed tenuous. With bleak voting odds, they surprised everyone by scoring a seat on the government bench. SPÖ Governor, Hans Peter Doskozil, chose them over the blues and turquoises.

Hassle-free Rise to Power: Anja Haider-Wallner's Story

Even the leading candidate, Anja Haider-Wallner, a newcomer with barely six months in the state parliament, was taken aback by her sudden promotion to Deputy Governor. At 45, she uttered," Suddenly Deputy Governor" after her inauguration in February.

Green Power Shift: Burgenland's New Face

The green wave isn't over yet. Since taking office, Haider-Wallner has embarked on several inaugural visits, focusing on beaver management and the National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel. She's also been engaging with citizens through her "Anja Answers!" dialogue tour. Public relations is a top priority, having 14 employees dedicated to communication and promotion.

Despite the long-standing conflict over the location of the planned hospital in a Natura-2000 area in Gols, Haider-Wallner seems open to compromise, introducing a design committee to "accompany" the new clinic's construction.

Red-Green Government: Organized Accompaniment?

As the first green deputy governor in Burgenland's political history, Haider-Wallner's approach to governance remains to be seen. The question lingers: is this red-green partnership just an organized accompaniment, or will it change the face of Burgenland's politics? Time will tell.
