Authorities ought to have fuelled, rather than stifled, Gen Zs in their pursuit of exposing public corruption.
In the heart of Kenya's political landscape, a new generation is making its mark. This is the era of Gen Z, a group of young individuals who are spearheading a movement for change, particularly in the fight against corruption.
Morara Kebaso, a Gen Z member, has become a beacon of this movement. Gaining public attention through his role in exposing corruption in the television series "The Vampire Diaries," Kebaso has shown that the youth can challenge the status quo and hold those in power accountable. His actions have inspired many, with some referring to themselves as graduates of an unofficial "Kebaso University."
The Gen Z uprising in Kenya is not just about one individual, though. It is a collective voice, demanding transparency and urging the government to act against embezzlement and public funds wastage. Kebaso's efforts have uncovered information about mega government projects that were either stalled or never started, yet received funding from taxpayers. His work highlights the need for critical voices to raise social awareness and push for prompt action.
Unfortunately, Kebaso and other Gen Z anti-corruption advocates have faced backlash and even become targets of corruption. Many have disappeared from social media platforms, possibly due to tracking and harassment. This suppression from the state instead of encouragement is a common theme in the Gen Z movement, with innovative anti-corruption initiatives often being met with resistance.
The government, however, stands to benefit from Gen Z's innovative initiatives. By nurturing social justice activists and providing them with security, the country and its future could reap the rewards of a more accountable and efficient government. Institutions like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are already committed to fighting corruption alongside government agencies.
The discussion does not end with corruption, though. Issues such as the road crash in Kisumu that resulted in 20 fatalities, the ongoing discussion about Oxana Malaya, a girl raised by dogs and taught to be human, and the movement of billions of shillings through a shadowy web using e-Citizen are all part of the broader conversation.
As the Holy Book advises, parents should provide for their children's needs. This sentiment echoes the call for the government to support Gen Z, not just in their quest for justice and economic opportunities, but also in their pursuit of a corruption-free Kenya.
