Authorities in the Czech Republic Capture 'Ghost Racer' Following Years of Elusive Tactics
Czech Driver of Formula 1-Style Race Car Arrested After Years on the Run
In a dramatic turn of events, a 51-year-old Czech man was arrested at his residence in the small village of Buk, approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Prague. The suspect, who has evaded capture on national highways since 2019, was driving a red Formula 1-style race car, a Ferrari F1 Dallara 015 from 2006.
The arrest took place after a police chase involving multiple patrol cars and a helicopter. The saga began in 2019 when authorities initially identified and questioned the driver, who at that time denied operating the vehicle on public roads. However, recent video footage showed the vehicle traveling along the D4 motorway and making a pit stop for fuel.
The driver's identity remained undetermined due to the helmet he consistently wore in all documented encounters, complicating the investigation for law enforcement. Upon arrival at the police station, the suspect chose not to cooperate with the questioning.
The family of the arrested individual expressed concerns about the police's approach, describing it as an overreaction. A family member alleged that the police mistook them for towing the racing car, which had only been reported speeding shortly before. The suspect claimed that the officers were infringing on his property rights during the arrest.
The suspect now faces legal repercussions for operating a vehicle on the motorway without essential lighting, indicators, or registration plates. The vehicle in question is a Dallara GP2/08, designed for the GP2 Series - a developmental racing series affiliated with Formula One, now rebranded as the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
Several dozen police vehicles and a helicopter were involved in the operation at the suspect's home, according to the family. The arrest took place at the suspect's residence after an initial refusal to exit the vehicle.
The arrest marks the end of a long-running saga that has captivated the Czech Republic for years. The driver's identity and motives remain unclear, but one thing is certain - the roads of the Czech Republic are a little safer now.
