Authorities in South Korea have issued a warrant for the detention of the spouse of imprisoned former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
In a historic move, South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, have been arrested simultaneously over criminal allegations. This marks the first time a presidential couple in South Korea has faced such charges concurrently.
The investigations against Kim Keon Hee are part of three special prosecutor probes launched under Seoul's new liberal government. The probe against Kim Keon Hee is related to the presidency of Yoon Suk Yeol.
Kim Keon Hee is accused of various crimes, including stock fraud, bribery, and election interference. She is suspected of manipulating the stock price of Deutsch Motors, a BMW dealer in South Korea, between 2009 and 2012. Additionally, she is accused of illegal interference with candidate nominations in the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and the 2024 general elections.
The arrest of Yoon Suk Yeol was over his brief imposition of martial law in December. Yoon was removed from office in April, and the ongoing investigations against him and Kim Keon Hee are being conducted by special prosecutors. The arrest of the former president and first lady does not necessarily imply guilt, as they have the right to a fair trial.
The arrest of Yoon Suk Yeol and Kim Keon Hee does not affect the ongoing investigations against them. The arrest warrants were issued by the Seoul Central District Court. Kim Keon Hee's detention was extended by court order in August 2025 amid these serious charges.
The arrest of the former first couple may have significant political implications for South Korea, given their former positions as president and first lady. However, it does not indicate a resolution to the investigations against them, as this is a developing story and will be updated.
