Authorities in Sindh have directed the removal of Moonis Alvi as CEO of the Karachi Electric Company due to charges of workplace harassment.
Moonis Alvi, the former CEO of K-Electric, has announced that he will file an appeal against a workplace harassment ruling issued by the Sindh Ombudsman. The decision, handed down by Justice (retired) Shah Nawaz Tariq, orders Alvi's immediate removal from his position and imposes a fine of Rs2.5 million on him.
In a series of tweets, Alvi described the verdict as "deeply distressing" and stated that he is reviewing the ruling with legal counsel and plans to appeal the decision, rejecting the findings as inaccurate. He believes the findings do not reflect the truth of the situation as he experienced it.
The Sindh Ombudsman's decision states that Alvi harassed and mentally tortured a female employee, penalising him under section 4(4)(ii)(c) of the Act, 2010. If Alvi fails to pay the fine within one month, his movable and immovable property may be confiscated, and his computerized national identity card (CNIC) and passport should be blocked, according to the order.
Moonis Alvi, a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan, joined KE in 2008 and has served as the company's Chief Financial Officer, Company Secretary, and Head of Treasury. Under his leadership, KE has undertaken a series of investments across the energy value chain, including the development of a 900 MW RLNG-fired power plant.
In May, a National Assembly (NA) committee raised questions about Alvi's role as the CEO of KE, stating that he seemed unfit for the position. However, it is not stated in the current paragraph that Alvi has been reappointed as the KE CEO.
Alvi has always upheld the values of integrity and dignity in professional interactions and believes in fostering safe and inclusive workplaces for all. He has stated that he will continue to fight for the truth through all legal means.
