Join us as we delve into the perspectives of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, as he shares his thoughts on the Iranian regime and the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict during an appearance on Sandra Maischberger's show.
In the midst of conflict - Recently into his tenure, Wadephul finds himself navigating two significant crises. In the Israel-Iran standoff, he is preparing to mediate alongside the UK and French Foreign Ministers in a bid to broker a peaceful resolution with Iran’s nuclear program. The trio hopes to secure guarantees that Iran intends only peaceful uses for its atomic capabilities.
Politics - The path toward a deal with Iran is not an easy one, and Wadephul acknowledges the multitude of obstacles ahead. "This regime is unjust and brutally suppresses its own people," he remarks. In fact, Iran has executed nearly 900 individuals so far in 2023.
Regarding the prospect of a regime change in Iran, Israel may have different objectives, but Wadephul dismisses the idea that Israel seeks to overthrow the current government. "We ought not pretend there's anything worthy of preservation in this regime. It's a disaster for the Iranian people," he says. However, the Iranian people should decide their destiny for themselves, according to Wadephul.
U.S. Involvement - The American administration has not yet expressed a desire to take part in resolving the Israel-Iran conflict directly; however, Wadephul is convinced that the U.S is preparing for retaliation against Iranian aggression. "This signals to Iran: negotiate or risk being attacked," he asserts.
Germany and Israel - Wadephul expresses solidarity with Israel in the conflict, emphasizing Israel's right to self-defense. He acknowledges the risks posed to Israel by Iran and the concern that Iran could soon arm itself with nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, potentially threatening not just Israel, but other countries as well.
Israel in Gaza - Although Wadephul supports Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas terrorists, he criticizes Israel's actions in Gaza. Specifically, he points out that Israel has blocked critical humanitarian aid, including food and medicine, to the region. This blockade has led to an untenable humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Nevertheless, democracies like Israel, even when fighting terrorist organizations, must adhere to different standards, according to Wadephul, and the international community should express its concern about the worsening conditions in Gaza.
Supporting Diplomacy - Despite his criticisms, Wadephul remains committed to diplomatic solutions, advocating for an end to hostilities soon and a return to negotiations. His approach prioritizes dialogue rather than escalation, aiming to avoid potential military confrontations and conflict expansion.
