In the quiet town of Nipigon, Ont., an unsettling incident took place on September 10 and 16, as police were forced to dispatch a bear that had become aggressive towards residents. The bear, which had been growing increasingly bold due to the approaching winter, was reported multiple times by concerned locals. The incidents occurred in the Brompton Road area, where the animal charged and growled at nearby residents, causing concern for public safety. Bear encounters have become more common in recent weeks, as these majestic creatures begin to bulk up for the winter months. This increase in human-bear interactions heightens the need for residents to be aware and take precautions to avoid potential conflicts. The protocol followed by the police in such situations involves assessing the threat to public safety, the feasibility of relocation, and the ability to carry out the intervention safely within a residential setting. Unfortunately, in this instance, the bear had to be destroyed due to its aggressive behaviour. Residents are reminded to never feed or approach bears. To avoid attracting bears, it is essential to secure your garbage and recycling, remove bird feeders, clean BBQs, and never leave pet food outdoors. In non-emergency situations, bear encounters can be reported to the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 (TTY 705-945-7641). However, if a bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, residents should call 911. Sadly, two women were attacked by a bear in Sault Ste. Marie in late August, underscoring the need for vigilance. The bear in Nipigon, Ontario, was killed by police officers in 2023 after it attacked two people. As we move into fall, people should be especially aware of the increased likelihood of bear encounters. Information on preventing and reporting bear encounters can be found here, ensuring a safer community for everyone.
