Law enforcement takes action against call center scam activities - Authorities effectively dismantle telephone scam operation

Crime doesn't pay, especially not for the call center scammers who've recently been taken down by the police in a joint operation spanning Germany and Poland. These crooks, stationed in Bochum, targeted the elderly in Poland, posing as phony cops and swindling their hard-earned cash.

Investigations led by the public prosecutor's office in Stralsund and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state criminal police office revealed a trio of shrewd Polish scammers. Authorities swooped in, executing arrest warrants issued by the Stralsund local court against these cunning con artists, marking this a significant blow against organized call center fraud.

The operation was the culmination of extensive undercover investigations conducted by various agencies since March 2025. Agencies involved included the public prosecutor's offices in Stralsund and Berlin, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state criminal police office, the Berlin state criminal police office, the police command in Warsaw, special forces from North Rhine-Westphalia's state police, and the Bochum police headquarters.

The success in Bochum follows recent developments in cybercrime elsewhere. Polish authorities dismantled a cyber scam ring, stealing $666,000 from victims posing as police officers and bank employees, netting charges against 46 individuals and nine detentions, mostly foreign nationals hailing from countries like Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. On the German side, the police seized the largest German-speaking cybercrime marketplace, Crimemarket, and arrested one of its operators, demonstrating the country's commitment to combating cybercrime.

In light of the recent takedown of call center scammers by the police in Bochum and their Polish counterparts, Stralsund's public prosecutor's office is focusing on implementing community policies to educate the general public, particularly the elderly, about phone scams. The authorities are also planning vocational training programs to equip police officers with the necessary skills to combat this kind of transnational cybercrime. In 2025, similar scammers in Poland were apprehended by local authorities, and this incident is marked under general-news and crime-and-justice categories. The joint operation in Bochum is indicative of Germany and Poland's continued efforts to combat cybercrime, and it serves as a reminder to be cautious when receiving calls from unknown numbers.
