Authorities Disclose Images of Omoyele Sowore [Pictures]
In a recent development, activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has been released by the Nigeria Police Force. The release comes after Sowore was held in connection with two separate petitions filed against him.
According to CP Abayomi Shogunle, Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Intervention Squad, the first petition against Sowore is related to the forgery of a police document, which he published online. The second petition is related to cyberbullying.
Despite his release, Sowore has been charged anew by the Nigeria Police Force with three counts, including inciting police mutiny by leading a police protest in July 2025. His arraignment is scheduled for August 14, 2025, before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore has denied the charges, describing them as baseless. He has also alleged police brutality during his detention, including a broken arm he sustained in custody. Sowore has emphasized his activism for better pensions and salaries for serving and retired police officers, denying any personal vendetta against the police.
It is worth noting that the police returned Sowore’s stolen AI-powered Ray-Ban glasses that were taken during the July protest he led.
The law allows the police to proceed with investigative procedures when someone refuses to talk, as in the case of Omoyele Sowore. However, the law also gives Sowore the right to remain silent. The police commissioner, Abayomi Shogunle, explained the legal implications of Sowore's refusal to provide a statement. The law gives the police certain responsibilities to fulfill under such circumstances.
Sowore addressed his supporters and well-wishers live via Facebook after his release, writing on his social media that he was released from unjust, illegal, and unwarranted detention. The release is said to be in response to the demands of the revolutionary movement.
