Authorities believe they have discovered the remains of Travis Decker, a suspect in the murder of his three daughters
Missing Army Veteran Travis Decker's Remains Found in Washington Cascades
After a month-long manhunt, authorities believe they have found the remains of Travis Decker, the Army veteran accused of killing his three daughters. The discovery was made in deep brush on Grindstone Mountain, an area that had not been previously searched.
The tragic discovery was made on the same day, May 30, when the bodies of his daughters, Olivia (5), Evelyn (8), and Paityn (9), were found with plastic bags over their heads at an abandoned campsite in the Washington Cascades. Since then, local, state, and federal officials have been searching for Decker without knowing whether he was still alive.
Human remains, including bone fragments, clothing, and personal items, were found at the scene. DNA samples obtained from the bags and cable ties found near the girls' bodies have been found to match Decker's profile. A bloody fingerprint was also discovered on his truck's tailgate. The collected items have been sent to a state police crime lab for DNA confirmation.
Interestingly, no other DNA was found on the bags or the cable ties, suggesting that Decker may have taken precautions to avoid leaving traces of his presence at the crime scene.
Decker, who was on the loose since May 30, likely escaped on foot after leaving behind his truck. The truck was found abandoned in the area of Rock Island Campground on June 2. His dog was taken to a humane society for care.
The investigation into the suspected remains of Travis Decker involves the sheriff's office of Chelan County and the forensic laboratory of the Washington State Patrol, which conducts the official identification of the remains. Drones, a swift water team, cadaver dogs, and GoPros were used in the multiagency search.
The remains were found at an elevation of 4,000 feet, indicating that Decker may have been well-prepared for survival in the wild, unless he stashed supplies out in the woods. Decker's equipment was found at the scene, suggesting that he may have been unprepared for the ordeal.
The sheriff's office has been in touch with the Decker family about the investigation and its findings. With the discovery of the remains, the arduous manhunt may have come to an end. However, the official confirmation of Decker's identity will be made once the DNA results are returned from the state police crime lab.
This is a developing story and more updates will be provided as information becomes available. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims during this difficult time.
