"German Government's Controversial Decision" on $4 Million Arms Exports to Israel Amidst Escalating Conflict

In a bold move that's sparked widespread outrage, the newly formed German government of CDU/CSU and SPD has given the green light for arms exports worth approximately $4 million to Israel. This announcement, made in response to a parliamentary query by Desiree Becker of the Left Party, was highlighted by German Press Agency (dpa) [1]. These exports took place between May 7th and June 10th, 2025, amid widespread criticism of Israel's military actions primarily in the Gaza Strip. It's important to note that these exports did not involve weapons of war [1].

This revelation marks the first time the new government has disclosed the amount of arms exports to Israel since taking office. Previous queries from the media were met with references to secret sessions of the Federal Security Council that oversee arms exports [1]. However, the government routinely supplies such information in response to parliamentary inquiries [1].

Compared to their predecessors, the current government's arms export approvals are relatively modest. If we compare this to the aftermath of the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel in October 2023, the previous government approved a staggering €485 million ($554 million) in arms exports [1]. In fact, in the first quarter of 2025 itself, the figure was a mere €28 million [1]. Israel remained one of the top ten importers of German arms at the time [1].

Discussions regarding German arms deliveries to Israel have been ongoing, with a pending lawsuit at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Nicaragua accuses Germany of complicity in genocide [1]. In recent weeks, the German government has intensified its criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, leading some, like the SPD, to advocate for a complete halt to arms exports to Israel [1]. However, the Union party disagrees with this stance [1].

Left Party MP Desiree Becker accused the German government of being "irresponsible in terms of security policy and scandalous in terms of humanitarian aid," stating that the $4 million could have provided "countless medicines and food" to the Gaza Strip instead [1].

  1. The controversial decision by the German government to export employment policies, totaling around $4 million, to Israel has sparked outrage amidst war-and-conflicts, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
  2. Despite increasing criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, the German government continues to engage in politics with Israel over employment policy matters, a move that some see as employing "scandalous" practices in terms of humanitarian aid.
