Authoritarian tendencies highlighted as troops are deployed to Washington, according to Human Rights Watch
In a controversial move, former President Donald Trump has announced his intention to mobilise the National Guard in Washington D.C., a city with a unique relationship with the federal government. This decision, made without the request of the district government, has raised concerns from human rights advocates and sparked debate about the role of military forces in civil law application.
At a press conference held at the White House, Trump justified the deployment by stating that the city is "invaded by violent gangs" and needs to be "cleaned up." He also referred to the homeless in the city as "rats," a statement that has drawn criticism from various quarters.
Tanya Greene, director of programs at HRWatch, expressed her concern about the deployment, stating that it raises serious issues related to civil liberties and the potential for excessive use of military force in a civilian urban setting. Greene believes that the militarization of local law enforcement is a precursor to authoritarianism and should be condemned by leaders around the world.
Trump's actions in Washington D.C. are not limited to the city. In June, he mobilized the California National Guard against the opinion of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. This move has been criticised as dangerous and unjustified by Greene.
It is important to note that crime rates in Washington D.C. have been decreasing for years. The mobilization of military forces in cities like Los Angeles and Washington exacerbates the potential for violence and costs millions of dollars that could be spent on basic services.
Unlike the 50 US states, the municipality of Washington D.C. has a special relationship with the federal state, limiting its autonomy. The district government has not requested military intervention, and involving the military in civil law application is considered a controversial and dangerous move.
Trump's initiative is aimed at restoring law, order, and public safety in Washington D.C., but critics argue that it infringes on civil liberties and could lead to a dangerous escalation of tensions. Trump has promised to "clean up" Washington D.C., and his statements on the matter have been published on his social network, Truth Social, on Sunday.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for the government to respect constitutional rights, avoid militarizing responses to domestic demonstrations, and ensure that the deployment of military forces is justified, necessary, and proportionate.
