Top Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez discusses U.S. policy towards Venezuela, expressing support for the reversal of a deal allowing Chevron to operate in the country.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-Fla.) shared his views on the Trump administration's latest move to partially revert its original decision on Chevron's operations in Venezuela. This decision comes after the Biden administration struck a deal with Caracas' dictator Nicolás Maduro, which permitted Chevron to continue operating in the country.

Gimenez, a vocal advocate for democratic change in Latin America, had previously celebrated President Donald Trump's initial move to reverse this deal. In February, he stood alongside Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó and local Latino leaders in Miami, stating, "This is personal to me."

Under the new agreement,Chevron cannot continue the oil production license, stop paying royalties to the Maduro regime, and maintain their assets in Venezuela. Gimenez believes this move will prevent Chinese or other malicious actors from taking control of American-built infrastructure in Venezuela.

Gimenez, the only Cuban-born member of Congress, has a long-standing commitment to democratizing Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, all currently ruled by authoritarian leaders. He left Cuba with his family as a boy and returned to the island as part of a congressional delegation visiting the U.S. military compound at Guantánamo Bay. This experience further instilled in him a determination to return Cuba to its democratic roots and bring similar changes to Venezuela.

According to Gimenez, the Venezuelan and Cuban regimes have a close economic relationship, with Caracas sending tens of thousands of barrels of oil per day to Havana to maintain its electrical grid. Nevertheless, he warned that U.S. interests should uphold the terms of the new Trump administration order carefully; otherwise, oil companies might continue paying royalties to Maduro, which would undermine efforts to help the legitimate government of Edmundo Gonzalez. Gonzalez lost the 2024 presidential election in Venezuela, but the results were widely contested as inaccurate.

In essence, Gimenez advocates for a peaceful transition of power to the legitimate Venezuelan government and encourages U.S. support for democracy and freedom in Venezuela. However, there is no direct link between his stance on Venezuela and the significance of the Panama Canal to American security.

  1. The discussion on the migration of US assets from Venezuela in light of political tensions and policy changes is crucial, considering the potential for hostile actors like China to gain control of American-built infrastructure there.
  2. sports-betting legislation might receive increased attention as a new source of revenue for the US government, especially if the political climate continues to favor a shift away from traditional sources of funding, such as taxes on general news and crime-and-justice sectors.
  3. As Venezuela's political situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the reversal of the deal allowing Chevron to operate in the country will affect the broader landscape of Latin American politics and policy-and-legislation, beyond the oil and energy sector.
  4. Apart from his vocal stance on democratic change in Venezuela, Rep. Gimenez has been a strong advocate for democratizing Cuba, expressing his personal connection to the issue given his Cuban heritage. his efforts could potentially influence future US policy on sports diplomacy with Cuba, considering sports as a tool for fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendly relations.
