British author Frederick Forsyth has left us at the age of 86 following a brief illness. His literary agent poignantly declared, "We grieve the departure of one of the world's foremost thriller writers." The enigmatic author is famed for his signature works, including "The Day of the Jackal" and "The Odessa File." Rumors of his daring past unfold a tale of a man who boldly plunged into experiences reminiscent of a thriller plotline.

The charismatic author, who often graced portraits with a cigarette clenched between his fingers on the saddle of a motorcycle, painted his life story as that of a womanizing adventurer in his life story, "Outsider." Born in Ashford, 1938, Forsyth experienced World War II growing up mere kilometers away from Nazi-occupied France.

The Crooked Path of Life & Literature

Forsyth's life story mirrors various historical tidal waves of the 20th century, linking his early life as a journalist and later success as an author. Initially landing a position as a correspondent for the Reuters news agency in Paris, the city inspired his debut novel, "The Day of the Jackal." In a stroke of ingenuity, Forsyth claims he penned the novel in just 35 days, while he was destitute and sleeping on a bed cushioned by his friend's couch. The book recounts an assassination attempt on French President Charles de Gaulle. Due to its cinematic appeal, the novel was adapted into a film in the 1970s, and later, an action flick starring Bruce Willis emerged in the 1990s.

Betrayal, Lies, and the Cold War

Forsyth's memoirs are a treasure trove of captivating anecdotes. His rendezvous with women and his near-brush with triggering World War III with a report on German troop movements at the Berlin Wall are among the tales he has shared. Although some of these accounts have been questioned for veracity, they highlight the author's adventurous spirit.

During the throes of the Cold War, Forsyth found himself in East Berlin, reporting on East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary for his employer. The magnetic allure of espionage led him to return to East Germany in service of the British secret service. He was tasked with entering as a tourist and smuggling back documents he obtained on the lavatory of a museum in Dresden.

Looking Back on a Life Lived

As an elderly man, Forsyth remained unapologetically unsentimental about his life, praising his two marriages to loving wives, his upbringing of two remarkable sons, and his good health. He penned his memoirs in 2015, closing with a reflection on the capriciousness of fate that has guided his life: "After all, I could soon find myself face-to-face with it!"

Trivia- Forsyth's brand of intrigue and mastery over intricate plotlines have led to his works such as "The Odessa File" and "The Day of the Jackal" being studied in university courses for their complexity and literary merit.- Forsyth criticized the BBC's coverage of the Nigerian Civil War, arguing that the media were too pro-Nigerian government and not critical enough.
