Martin Cruz Smith, the renowned author known for his versatility in various genres and his creation of the iconic Arkady Renko series, has passed away at the age of 82. Born in Pennsylvania in 1942 into a musical family, Smith settled in the US state of California with his family and spent the rest of his life weaving tales that captivated readers worldwide.

Smith was remembered as an adventurer, traveler, and explorer, a man of deepest humanity, humor, and insight. His works, spanning across genres including Westerns, horror, historical fiction, and crime novels, brought him significant acclaim, particularly in the crime genre.

"Gorky Park," a tense crime novel about KGB agents and bloody murders behind the Iron Curtain, gained him worldwide fame when it was published in the early 1980s. The material for this groundbreaking novel was successfully adapted into a film with William Hurt in the lead role. Smith's work as a crime author was so captivating that he was awarded the prestigious Gold Dagger Award for it.

The Arkady Renko series, which started with "Gorky Park," brought Smith worldwide fame and solidified his status as a major figure in modern detective fiction. The series, considered his most notable work, earned him the British Crime Prize Gold Dagger and the Hammett Prize twice for his novels "Havana Bay" and "Gorky Park." In 2019, Smith was also awarded the Grand Master Award, one of the highest honours in the mystery writing genre, by the Mystery Writers of America.

Smith's protagonist, Arkady Renko, faced deteriorating health in the later sequels, a reflection of Smith's own struggles with Parkinson's disease, which he lived with for three decades. Despite his health challenges, Smith continued to write, and his latest Renko adventure, "Hotel Ukraine," was released on July 8.

Smith was not just a celebrated author but also a husband, father, and grandfather. His wife, Emily, quoted him as feeling like the happiest man in the world. Smith's death was announced by his publisher, Simon & Schuster, on July 11.

Smith's legacy will live on through his captivating stories and the indelible mark he left on the mystery and suspense genre. His work will continue to inspire new generations of writers and readers alike.
