Gercke, who moved effortlessly between different literary genres, is best known for her Bella Block novels, which captured the hearts of readers and later those of television viewers. The series, adapted for ZDF in 1993 by Max Färberböck, established her reputation and left a lasting impact on German crime literature and television.

In 2000, she received the Glauser Honorary Prize from the "Association of German Crime Writers - Syndikat" for her "lifetime achievement in the service of German crime fiction".
