Germany's female football team put on a scintillating show against Austria in their final match before the European Championship (EM). The squad, led by Coach Christian Wueck, tore apart Austria with an emphatic 6-0 victory at the Wiener Franz-Horr Stadium in Vienna.

"Our team had an extraordinary time out there," declared captain Giulia Gwinn during the post-match interview with ARD: "The first half was nothing short of spectacular. We should be proud of ourselves."

The match began with a bang, as Sydney Lohmann netted a goal just 14 seconds into the game, thanks to a precise cross from Selina Cerci. Despite occasional defensive lapses, Austria struggled to capitalize on them.

The DFB team, however, struck with deadly precision after swift attacks down the flanks. Lea Schüller headed in the second goal in the 9th minute, followed by Cerci (26th), Bühl (31st), Lohmann again (39th), and Laura Freigang (43rd). Although Schüller missed two good opportunities earlier, the team's overall clinical finishing left Austria's resistance crumbling.

Football Insights:

  • Fluid Attacking Play: Germany demonstrated impressive fluidity in their attacking play, quickly switching the ball from one flank to another, leaving Austria's defense struggling to keep up.
  • Depth and Variety: The team's goalscoring abilities were evident, with players like Lohmann, Schüller, Cerci, Bühl, and Freigang all contributing to the goal tally. This variety in goal scorers underlined the team's attacking potency and depth.
  • Defensive Resilience: Despite Austria's attempts to mount a comeback, Germany's defense held firm, thanks to strong performances from players like Rebecca Knaak and Ann-Katrin Berger in goal.

In the second half, Coach Wueck made some strategic changes, bringing on several fresh legs. The team continued to dominate the contest, with Ann-Katrin Berger looking more assured after a few early mistakes. The score remained 6-0, as the team eased their way to victory.

With the European Championship final against Poland just a month away, this impressive performance has given the team ample confidence and momentum. Coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg's absence was noticeable, but interim coach Wueck more than held his own.

The team will now head to Herzogenaurach for further fine-tuning before the European Championship debuts. The question remains whether Lena Oberdorf, who is yet to recover from her ACL injury, will travel with the team to Switzerland.
