Austria's spring warmth vanishes as winter storms return this week
Austria's brief spring warmth is set to vanish abruptly this week. A cold front sweeping in from the west will bring a sharp return to winter conditions by Wednesday. Residents and farmers are being urged to prepare for freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.
Until recently, Austria had enjoyed mild spring weather, with temperatures climbing to 18°C in early March. No cold wave had been recorded in late March 2026, and forecasts had suggested a higher chance of mild conditions for the first half of the month. Now, however, a sudden shift is underway.
From Wednesday, a cold front will push significantly colder air across the country. Stormy winds and heavy rain showers will hit western regions first, quickly turning to snow—even in lowland areas. Mountainous zones could see accumulations of up to a metre. Nighttime temperatures will plummet to between -3 and 0°C. In Vienna, daytime highs on Wednesday and Thursday may barely reach freezing, hovering between 0 and 5°C. The late winter snap is also expected to disrupt agriculture, particularly threatening apricot buds and other delicate plants. Gardeners are advised to move sensitive species indoors. Winter tire regulations remain in force until April 15, and drivers should be ready for icy roads. The return of spring remains uncertain, with cold conditions likely to persist beyond the weekend.
The abrupt change will mark a stark end to Austria's early spring warmth. Farmers, motorists, and residents must now contend with freezing nights, snow, and strong winds. Forecasters have not ruled out further delays to the arrival of stable spring weather.
