Austria's Schools Thrive in Digital Transformation, but More Teacher Training Needed
The coronavirus pandemic has sparked a rapid digital transformation in Austrian schools. A recent OECD study, TALIS, reveals a high level of satisfaction with technical equipment among educators, with only 4% reporting that teaching quality is hindered by technical issues. However, Austrian teachers lag behind their EU and OECD counterparts in advanced digital media use.
Austrian educators praise the country's technical equipment, with 96% reporting no issues affecting teaching quality. Despite this, they use digital media less frequently for personalized learning paths and other advanced uses compared to their international peers. Over half of the teachers surveyed expressed a desire for additional training in digital media use and technical skills.
Since 2020, first-grade pupils in lower secondary schools and academic secondary schools have had access to affordable laptops and tablets. Students report being more motivated and not experiencing negative effects such as reduced concentration or increased classroom noise due to digital devices. A majority of students find digital media a meaningful addition to classroom instruction.
Teachers incorporate digital media in a quarter to half of their lessons, mainly to convey content or support exercises and assignments. The pandemic has led to an increase in digital educational resources and teacher training programs.
While Austrian schools have made significant strides in digital transformation, there is still room for improvement in advanced digital media use and teacher training. With students and teachers largely satisfied with the digital offerings, investing in teacher training and innovative digital resources can further enhance the quality of education in Austria.
