Austria's Michelin stars surge to 124, outpacing France per capita in 2026

Austria has secured 124 Michelin stars across 101 restaurants in the 2026 guide. The country now ranks third globally for stars per capita, surpassing France. New awards were spread across all federal states, with fresh one-star honours for venues like Ansitz 12 in Tyrol and RAR Fine Dining in Salzburg. The latest Michelin guide highlights Austria's growing culinary reputation. While France boasts 31 three-star venues, Austria has just two—yet its per capita ranking places it above its neighbour. Among the standout winners, Gerhard Fuchs and Christian Zach of Weinbank earned a new two-star rating, along with the Sommelier Award.

Chefs celebrated in style, with several sporting the Jacob Elordi-inspired hairstyle and mustache. Stefan Lastin received his star for Gamskogelhütte in a phone call from Thomas Dorfer of Landhaus Bacher. Monika Müller, chef at Forelle am Weissensee, credited her service skills to her parents' lakeside restaurant. Industry figures reacted with pride and ambition. Astrid Steharnig-Staudinger, head of the Austrian National Tourist Office, admitted to feeling emotional. Karin Seiler of Tirol Werbung noted that while Austria isn't yet a food tourism hotspot, it's making progress. Thierry Guillon-Verne, CEO of Metro Austria, even compared Bib Gourmand awards to the World Cup in terms of prestige.

Austria's 124 Michelin stars reflect a thriving dining scene, with new honours spread nationwide. The country's per capita ranking and rising profile suggest a shift toward greater culinary recognition. Officials and chefs alike see this as a step forward for Austrian gastronomy.
