Austria’s freezing rain paralyzes travel with icy roads and train chaos

Freezing rain has hit parts of Austria, causing widespread travel disruptions across several regions. Roads, railways, and flights are all affected, with icy conditions expected to last until Tuesday afternoon.

The freezing rain began overnight, leading to black ice on roads and pavements. Vienna has temporarily lifted its salt-spreading ban until 12 PM to help manage the hazard. Drivers are being warned to slow down and keep a safe distance, while cyclists have been advised to avoid riding altogether.

Train services are facing significant interruptions. Railjet trains between Vienna Central Station and Vienna Airport have been suspended, though the City Airport Train (CAT) and S-Bahn services are still operating via Wien Mitte. Long-distance Südbahn trains will now start and end at Vienna Meidling instead of their usual terminals. To ease the impact, all national train tickets bought by January 12 will stay valid until January 13, with seat reservations paused for now. Flights have also been disrupted, with several diverted away from Vienna-Schwechat Airport. Delays are expected across Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Upper Austria, and Salzburg until Tuesday afternoon. Pedestrians are being warned of icy sidewalks, increasing the risk of slips and falls.

The freezing conditions are set to continue, affecting travel plans for thousands. Authorities have urged caution on roads and pavements, while transport operators work to minimise delays. The situation is expected to improve by Tuesday afternoon, but disruptions may linger until then.
