Pickerl in Austria 2027 History - What You Need to Know - Austria's ASFINAG to End Adhesive Highway Vignettes in 2027

ASFINAG, the Austrian infrastructure company, is set to fully transition to digital highway vignettes by February 1, 2027. The move comes after two decades of using adhesive vignettes, with the last physical ones to be issued in 2026.

The digital vignette system, introduced in 2017, has gained popularity, with over 75% of annual vignettes now purchased digitally. ASFINAG has made the process convenient, allowing purchases even without a smartphone at rest areas or border crossing machines using just the license plate number. The digital vignettes are valid immediately upon purchase, except for two-month or annual vignettes which have an 18-day cancellation period.

Prices for all vignette types will increase slightly in 2026, with the last adhesive vignette for that year being bright red. Drivers should note that the fine for driving without a valid vignette is 120 euros, with additional penalties for non-payment.

From 2027, all highway vignettes in Austria will be digital, marking the end of the adhesive vignette system that has been in use since 1997. ASFINAG's digital vignettes offer convenience and flexibility, with a slight price increase across all types in 2026. Drivers are advised to stay informed about the changes and ensure they have a valid vignette to avoid penalties.
