Meet the enigmatic trio suspected of being part of an Austrian terror network plans for simultaneous strikes in Mecca, Dubai, and Istanbul. Only the attack in Mecca was carried out, with their accomplice, Hasan E., in Saudi Arabian custody since then.
One member, Beran A., was meant to attack in Dubai, but he reportedly had second thoughts, opting for a concert in Vienna instead. But who was the mystery man intended for Istanbul? A phantom the Austrian authorities had been hunting relentlessly for weeks, now also in custody.
His name is Arda K., a 20-year-old from Vienna-Favoriten with Turkish roots. He shared a common interest with his friend Hasan E., both being devout Muslims. Their friendship continued after school, with Arda K. visiting Hasan in Istanbul a year ago. However, Arda K. gave a different excuse for his return to Austria – running out of money.
Although it seems there was no Istanbul attack, it appears that Arda K. got cold feet, as alleged chat messages exchanged with Beran A. heavily incriminate them all. The authorities kept close tabs on Arda K., hoping to unveil secrets about the terror network's inner workings and other followers.
On a recent Wednesday, Arda K. was arrested. Like his companions, he is suspected of supporting the extremist group "Islamic State." The investigation continues.
Vienna officials have applied for Arda K.'s detention, and the decision will be made by the Vienna Regional Criminal Court over the weekend. In the meantime, Arda K. has been transferred to the JA Josefstadt Correctional Facility.
If we delve into the crime statistics in Vienna, reports increased by 10.8% from the previous year. However, the clearance rate was relatively low at 44.3%. Owing to the rise in foreign suspects, reaching 55.3%, it appears that Vienna, in comparison to many other major cities, still grapples with crime.
