Austria Tightens Gun Laws After School Tragedy in Graz

In the aftermath of the heart-wrenching school shooting in Graz, Austria, the government has decided to fortify gun laws. Key adjustments are on the table, such as elevating the legal age to buy guns, more rigorous psychological assessments for license applicants, and improved data-sharing between authorities. These measures are intended to address loopholes in the current system that allowed a troubled man to take innocent lives.

Last week, a 21-year-old Austrian gunman shook the nation as he stormed his former school with a pistol and a modified shotgun, causing a horrifying bloodbath that took nine young lives and a teacher's, before he ended his own life. Both weapons belonged to him legally.

While obtaining a shotgun in Austria is a walk in the park, purchasing a pistol requires a gun license. However, psychological instability had already raised red flags in 2021, resulting in the shooter's dismissal from military service [1]. This disturbing incident has sparked public outcry, resulting in political action to fortify the nation's firearms regulations.

Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) has pledged to address the issue, declaring on ORF radio, “We cannot allow such acts to happen again. Our focus is on protecting our citizens." [2] The Austrian government aims to finalize a package of measures by next week.
